World of Warcraft: Forever announced, launching November 4

Blizzard's third version of WoW expands vanilla sideways instead of upward: 1,000 new quests, nine dungeons, a new race, and a level cap that stays at 60.

Blizzard opened BlizzCon 2026 by announcing World of Warcraft: Forever, a third full version of the game that sits alongside modern WoW and Classic. It launches November 4, 2026, with a beta opening September 17.

The pitch is the one the Classic+ community has been asking for since 2019: keep the level cap at 60 and keep building. Forever expands vanilla Azeroth outward rather than upward — new zones threaded into the existing 1–60 journey, new dungeons and raids, and a new playable race, without an expansion's worth of levels stacked on top.

What is actually in it

Blizzard's reveal put concrete numbers on the scope:

Content Announced
New quests 1,000, spread across the whole 1–60 bracket
New dungeons 9
New raids 10 and 20-player
New race The Skyborne, a neutral elven race
New battleground Darkspear Islands
Level cap Stays 60

Three characters showing new race and class combinations: a plate-armoured tauren, a gnome, and a dwarf with totems

The reveal trailer also showed race and class combinations that never existed in vanilla — an Undead Paladin among them — alongside a new reputation system that grants both items and account-wide perks.

The level cap is the whole design

The level cap staying at 60 is the load-bearing decision here. Every Classic relaunch so far has eventually rolled forward into the next expansion, which resets gear, invalidates the old world, and turns the 1–60 content everyone actually came for into a corridor you rush through.

Forever's answer is to refuse the roll-forward. New content arrives as more of Azeroth at the same cap rather than as a higher ceiling, which is why the quests are distributed across the entire 1–60 range instead of being bolted onto the end.

Azeroth, rebuilt but recognisable

Forever also ships a substantial rendering update: new lighting and global illumination, volumetric particle effects, a new water renderer and real-time shadows. Crucially, there is an HD/SD toggle for both characters and the world, so the 2004 presentation remains available.

What we still do not know

Blizzard has not detailed encounter design for the new raids, has not shown how the Skyborne play beyond their racial abilities, and has not published final talent trees — the BlizzCon build was a demo. Content cadence past launch is also unannounced, beyond a raid unlock dated December 9, 2026.

The beta on September 17 is the first chance to check the pitch against the game.
