Aimed Shot goes baseline for all three trees, Marksmanship gets a petless build in Lone Wolf, and Survival is reworked into a melee spec built on traps and bleeds.

Specialisations

Beast Mastery

DPS

Pet damage, now with a hawk summon that stacks to two and improved in-combat mana regeneration.

Marksmanship

DPS

Ranged burst, with Lone Wolf offering 20% more damage for playing without a pet.

Survival

DPS

Reworked into melee: traps, bleeds and Mongoose Bite rather than a ranged utility tree.

New and changed abilities

Aimed Shot

Baseline

Now baseline for all three specs, with a 2 second cast and a 6 second cooldown — faster than Classic.

Sniper Shot

New

Marksmanship talent: a 4 second cast on a 15 second cooldown.

Strider Kick

New

Survival melee attack on an 8 second cooldown.

Aspect of the Beast

Changed

Now also makes you untrackable and adds 50 melee attack power.

Talent changes by tree

Beast Mastery

  • Deadly Aspects grants attack speed.
  • A new ability summons hawks, with two active at once.
  • Bestial Discipline improves mana regeneration in combat.

Marksmanship

  • Lone Wolf increases damage by 20% while no pet is active.
  • Careful Aim converts 20% of Intellect into attack power.
  • Sniper Shot adds a hard-hitting ranged cast.

Survival

  • The tree is reworked toward melee, traps and bleeds.
  • Lacerating Strikes capstone applies a bleed through Mongoose Bite.
  • Entrapment roots enemies for 5 seconds.

Hunter gets the most opinionated rework in Forever: Survival stops being a grab-bag utility tree and becomes a melee spec, and Marksmanship gets an explicit petless option.

Lone Wolf changes what a Hunter is

Lone Wolf grants 20% more damage while you have no pet active. In Classic the pet was non-negotiable — a meaningful chunk of your damage and your only real utility — so a petless build was strictly worse in every situation.

Offering 20% as compensation makes it a genuine choice, and it quietly solves the most persistent practical complaint about the class: pets pathing badly, pulling extra packs, and dying to raid damage you cannot prevent. Whether 20% is the right number is exactly what a beta is for.

Careful Aim converting 20% of Intellect into attack power is a subtler win. It makes Intellect on mail worth something to a Marksmanship Hunter, which widens the gear pool in a game where loot is scarce.

Survival goes melee

This is a rebuild, not a tune. Survival in Classic was where you went for Deterrence, trap talents and Wyvern Sting; almost nobody played it as a damage spec because it had no damage identity of its own.

Forever points it squarely at melee: Strider Kick on an 8 second cooldown, Lacerating Strikes applying a bleed through Mongoose Bite, and Entrapment rooting for 5 seconds. Melee Hunter has been a community request for two decades and a running joke for about as long. Its arrival in a vanilla-derived game is the single biggest surprise in the class notes.

The open question is weapon competition. A melee Survival Hunter wants the same weapons as Warriors and Rogues, in a game where raids are twenty people and good weapons drop rarely.

Aimed Shot baseline

Aimed Shot being baseline across all three trees — with a faster 2 second cast and a 6 second cooldown — means every Hunter has a real opener regardless of spec. In Classic it sat 20 points deep in Marksmanship with a 3 second cast.
