General information

Realms and rulesets

Forever has no realms. You pick a ruleset - Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Hardcore - and play in a single connected region-wide world.

World of Warcraft: Forever has no realms. There is no server list, no realm selection screen, and no realm transfers.

Instead you choose a ruleset, and everyone on that ruleset in your region plays in one connected world — effectively a single mega-realm per ruleset.

The four rulesets

Ruleset What it means
Normal Adventuring and PvE focus. You fight other players at your own discretion.
PvP You are almost always at risk of attack from the opposing faction.
Roleplay Strict naming conventions and behaviour rules for immersive play.
Hardcore Permanent character death. Coming after launch, not at release.

Hardcore is not available on 4 November. Blizzard has placed it in the post-launch roadmap without a date.

What is shared and what is not

Shared across Normal, PvP and Roleplay:

Not shared:

  • Grouping. You can only group with players on the same ruleset.
  • Factions. Alliance and Horde remain completely separate — no cross-faction grouping.

Hardcore is excluded from the account-wide sharing that links the other three, which is consistent with how Hardcore has been kept separate elsewhere.

Character names

Names use a two-part format and must be unique per region rather than per realm.

This is a meaningful upgrade in practice. In the realm model, a popular name is taken on every server you might want to play on, and a name you like is only yours on one realm. A two-part format across a whole region gives vastly more room.

Why this matters

Realm populations are the oldest structural problem in WoW. Servers die, guilds fracture, and the fix has always been paid transfers or forced merges. Removing realms removes the failure mode entirely: there is no such thing as a dead server if there are no servers.

The trade is community identity. Realm reputation — knowing the good guilds, the notorious players, the server-first races — does not survive a region-wide population. Whether Forever replaces that with anything is an open question.
