Curses split into Curses and Banes so you can hold both, damage-over-time effects can finally critically strike, and Destruction gains Incinerate and a damage-sharing Bane of Havoc.

Specialisations

Affliction

DPS

Stacked damage over time, with a capstone that scales Shadow damage off your other effects.

Demonology

Pet-centric damage, with Demonic Sacrifice moved earlier and its bonus kept across demons.

Destruction

DPS

Direct damage gaining Incinerate and a cleave through Bane of Havoc.

New and changed abilities

Curses split into Banes

Changed

Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are renamed as Bane spells, so a Warlock can hold a utility Curse and a damage Bane at the same time.

DoT critical strikes

Changed

Damage-over-time effects can now critically strike.

Subjugate Demon

Renamed

Formerly Enslave Demon.

Incubus

New

A male alternative to the Succubus summon.

Talent changes by tree

Affliction

  • Drain Hope capstone increases Shadow damage dealt by your other damage-over-time effects.

Demonology

  • Demonic Sacrifice moves earlier in the tree.
  • Demonic Pact maintains the Demonic Sacrifice bonus with a different demon active.
  • Demonic Brand improves pet threat through Searing Pain.

Destruction

  • Incinerate adds a direct Fire spell to the rotation.
  • Shadow and Flame improves Conflagrate and Shadowburn.
  • Bane of Havoc marks an enemy, transferring 15% of damage for 5 minutes.
  • Rain of Fire gains crowd-control potential.

Warlock's two most important changes are both structural rules rather than new buttons, and both fix long-standing frustrations with how the class scaled.

Curses and Banes: you can finally have both

In Classic, a Warlock can maintain exactly one Curse per target. That forces a choice between your own damage (Curse of Agony) and the raid's (Curse of the Elements, Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Tongues). In practice the raid wins, and Warlocks spend the fight applying a curse that does nothing for their own metre.

Splitting the school into Curses and Banes means a Warlock applies one of each. That is a substantial personal damage gain for every raiding Warlock and, more importantly, removes a conflict between doing your job and being useful.

Damage-over-time effects can critically strike

This is the single largest scaling change in any class in Forever.

In Classic, DoTs cannot crit. They also scale poorly with spell power. The consequence is that Affliction — the spec built entirely on DoTs — gets worse relative to everyone else as gear improves, which is why vanilla Warlocks end up playing Destruction or shadow-bolt-spam builds in raids regardless of preference.

Letting DoTs crit gives Affliction a reason to want crit rating and a reason to keep scaling. Drain Hope, the capstone that increases Shadow damage from your other DoTs, stacks on top of that.

Destruction gets a cleave

Bane of Havoc marks an enemy and transfers 15% of your damage to it for five minutes. Classic Destruction has no AoE worth the name outside of Rain of Fire, which roots you in place channelling.

A five-minute duration is notable — this is a set-and-forget cleave for dungeon packs rather than a burst cooldown.

Incinerate adds a direct Fire nuke, giving Destruction a filler that is not Shadow Bolt. In Classic, "Destruction" Warlocks mostly cast Shadow Bolt, which made the tree's Fire talents largely decorative.

Demonology keeps its bonus

Demonic Pact maintaining the Demonic Sacrifice bonus while a different demon is active fixes the tree's central awkwardness: Demonic Sacrifice makes you stronger by deleting your pet, which is a strange thing to ask of the pet spec.
