Frostfire Bolt goes baseline, Arcane Blast gives Arcane a spammable nuke with a real cost, and Fire gets a Hot Streak that shortens Pyroblast rather than making it instant.

Specialisations

Arcane

DPS

Arcane Blast stacking damage against a rising mana cost, with Missile Barrage as the release valve.

Fire

DPS

Crit-driven burst with a Hot Streak that shortens Pyroblast instead of making it free.

Frost

DPS

Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost bring instant damage and procs to a spec built on control.

New and changed abilities

Frostfire Bolt

New

A hybrid Fire and Frost bolt, baseline for every Mage.

Comprehend Scroll

New

Deciphers untranslated scrolls — a utility spell rather than a damage one.

Arcane Blast

New

Joins Arcane Missiles as a core nuke. Repeated casts stack a damage increase but raise the mana cost.

Talent changes by tree

Arcane

  • Arcane Blast stacks damage on repeated casts at a rising mana cost.
  • Missile Barrage adds an interaction with Arcane Missiles.

Fire

  • Hot Streak reduces Pyroblast cast time by 25%, stacking to 3 — it does not make it instant.
  • Wake of Fire reduces the cooldown of Blast.
  • Combustion now lasts until 4 critical strikes.

Frost

  • Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost add instant damage and procs.
  • Cold Snap moves deeper into the tree.
  • Blizzard and Permafrost have weaker slowing effects.

Mage's changes are the most carefully balanced in the notes. Two signature abilities from later expansions arrive, but both are deliberately weakened from the versions players remember.

Hot Streak, but not the Hot Streak you know

In the expansion where it debuted, Hot Streak made Pyroblast instant. That single proc defined Fire Mage for a decade.

Forever's version reduces Pyroblast's cast time by 25% and stacks to three. Three stacks is a 75% reduction — fast, but never free. This is a considered decision: instant Pyroblast in a vanilla-era game, with vanilla-era crit values and no diminishing returns on burst, would be extremely hard to balance in PvP.

Expect the community to complain that it feels worse than they remember. It is supposed to.

Arcane Blast with a real cost

Arcane Blast stacking damage while raising its own mana cost is the mechanic that made Arcane interesting in later expansions: a ramp you have to decide when to break. Arcane in Classic is a support tree nobody plays past Arcane Concentration and Presence of Mind, so giving it a spammable nuke with a self-limiting cost gives it a real identity for the first time.

Missile Barrage interacting with Arcane Missiles is the release valve — it gives you something to do with the stacks other than let them fall off.

Frost gets instants

Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost add instant damage to a spec whose Classic identity was almost entirely control and survivability. Frost Mages in vanilla deal poor raid damage and are played for utility.

Note the compensating nerf: Blizzard and Permafrost get weaker slows, and Cold Snap moves deeper into the tree. Frost is gaining damage and paying for it in control, which is a coherent trade rather than a straight buff.

Frostfire Bolt baseline

A hybrid Fire and Frost bolt available to every Mage is a hedge against the levelling problem: a Frost Mage who meets a Frost-immune target in Classic has almost nothing to do. Frostfire Bolt gives every spec a second damage school for free.
