Forever's graphics overhaul, and the toggle that makes it optional
Global illumination, volumetric fog, a new water renderer and real-time terrain shadows - with an HD/SD switch that restores the 2004 look at any time.
Blizzard's Evolving a Timeless World panel on BlizzCon day two was the most technically detailed session of the show, and the one that answered the question Classic players always ask first: can I turn it off?
Yes. Forever ships with an HD/SD toggle for both characters and the world, and it can be flipped at any time.
What the new renderer does
| Feature | What changes |
|---|---|
| Global illumination | Light bounces, so interiors and shaded terrain pick up colour from their surroundings |
| Volumetrics | Fog and god rays with real depth, rather than flat fog planes |
| New water renderer | Water flows and catches light instead of scrolling a texture |
| Real-time shadows | Terrain casts shadows — the sun moving across Blackrock Mountain moves the shadow |
| Correct reflections | The sun and moon reflect properly, which makes sunsets and moonsets read as real |

Terrain self-shadowing is the one that changes the look most. Vanilla's world was lit almost flatly, with shadows baked into textures. Real terrain shadows give Azeroth's landscape actual volume at a distance.

"Azeroth as you remember it"
The stated visual goal is not fidelity for its own sake. Blizzard framed it as rendering Azeroth the way it lives in memory — nostalgia has already quietly upgraded everyone's mental image of vanilla, and the target is that remembered version rather than the literal 2004 frame buffer.
That is a defensible north star and also a convenient one, because it gives the art team licence to change things while claiming fidelity. The HD/SD toggle is what keeps it honest: if the new lighting oversteps, the original is one setting away.
Why the toggle matters more than the features
Every previous attempt to modernise Classic visuals has run into the same wall. The audience self-selected for the old presentation, and a forced update reads as losing the thing they came back for.
Shipping both and letting players choose per-category — characters separately from the world — sidesteps the argument entirely. You can run an updated world with 2004 character models, which is very close to how most people misremember vanilla anyway.
Still unknown
Blizzard has not published system requirements for the HD path, which is the obvious open question for a game whose audience runs it on modest hardware and in large raid groups. The beta should surface that quickly.
