Forever's graphics overhaul: HD models, Classic settings and GPU support
Forever updates Azeroth's lighting, water and shadows. Here's how HD and SD character models work, plus the GPU support details to check before launch.
Forever updates Azeroth's lighting, water and shadows, while letting you choose HD or SD character models. Blizzard's launch guide describes that as a per-character appearance setting, which you can change in Options or at a Barbershop.
What the new renderer does
| Feature | What changes |
|---|---|
| Global illumination | Light bounces, so interiors and shaded terrain pick up colour from their surroundings |
| Volumetrics | Fog and god rays with real depth, rather than flat fog planes |
| New water renderer | Water flows and catches light instead of scrolling a texture |
| Real-time shadows | Terrain casts shadows — the sun moving across Blackrock Mountain moves the shadow |
| Correct reflections | The sun and moon reflect properly, which makes sunsets and moonsets read as real |

Terrain self-shadowing is the one that changes the look most. Vanilla's world was lit almost flatly, with shadows baked into textures. Real terrain shadows give Azeroth's landscape actual volume at a distance.

Classic or Enhanced?
At first login, Classic starts you with SD models and a familiar UI layout; Enhanced starts with HD models and more interface helpers enabled. You can adjust the individual settings later under Game Menu > Options.
Our original article described HD/SD as a switch for the whole world. Blizzard's current guide confirms the character-model choice; it doesn't promise a complete return to the 2004 renderer.
Check your graphics card
Blizzard has now published its GPU support cutoff: AMD GCN 1, NVIDIA Maxwell or Intel Skylake, or newer. These are architecture limits, not the full minimum specs. Some cards from those generations are still below the game's requirements.
Check the GPU support notice and the requirements on the Battle.net shop before launch.
